Biography
Jacob Lawrence was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, studied art under the renowned African American artist Charles Alston, and eventually attended the American Artists School in New York. After working on various projects for the Works Progress Administration (WPA), he moved to Harlem to pursue his career as a studio artist. Three decades later, in 1971, he accepted a position at the University of Washington as a full professor. Lawrence committed the rest of his career to teaching, as well as producing paintings, prints, and large public works.
