Artist, cartoonist, and writer Lalo Alcaraz earned a BA in art and environmental design from San Diego State University in 1987, and an MA in architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1991. Known for editorial cartoons, Alcaraz has chronicled Latino ascendency in America since the early 1990s. In 2002, he created La Cucaracha, the first nationally syndicated Latino political comic strip, which runs in a broad spectrum of newspapers. Alcaraz contributed a work of art called Viva Obama to President Barack Obama's 2008 political campaign. His awards and honors include five Southern California Journalism Awards for Best Cartoon in Weekly Papers (LA Press Club), Latino Spirit Award (California Legislature and Office of the Lt. Governor), Premio Award for Excellence in Communications (LA Hispanic Public Relations Association), and Art as a Hammer Award (Center for the Study of Political Graphics, LA). His books include Latino USA: A Cartoon History, 15th Anniversary Edition (2012), and Migra Mouse: Political Cartoons on Migration (2004).
