Biography
John Lee Beatty was educated at Brown University and the Yale School of Drama. At Yale, he studied under Ming Cho Lee, and his influence is evident in Beatty's early work. He also acknowledges the influence of Robert Edmond Jones and Jo Mielziner, as well as painters Edouard Vuillard, John Singer Sargent, and Whistler.
Early in his career, Beatty designed numerous productions for the Circle Repertory Company in New York, later creating scene designs for more than 100 Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. Beatty is the recipient of Tony, Obie, Drama Desk, and Maharam awards.
