Biography
Straiges was educated at Brooklyn College and Yale University, where he was inspired by the work of Ming Cho Lee. He went on to design sets and costumes for the American Puppet Theatre, Yale Repertory Theatre, and the San Francisco Summer Opera, among others.
Straiges displays a keen understanding of the materials he chooses to work with, thus possessing the ability to achieve very special effects. "An important part of design," he says, "is taking your materials and somehow abstracting them so they bcome stonger and more exciting, even when a realistic interior is required." (Straiges in Theatre Crafts, February 1982).
The hallmark of Straiges's work is his craftsmanship in creating models - no detail is overlooked; a sense of dedication to perfection is obvious. "Models may be time-consuming, but nothing is closer to what you see on stage." (Theatre Crafts, February 1982).
