Straiges was educated at Brooklyn College and Yale University, where he was inspired by the work of Ming Cho Lee. He went on to design sets and costumes for the American Puppet Theatre, Yale Repertory Theatre, and the San Francisco Summer Opera, among others.
Straiges displays a keen understanding of the materials he chooses to work with, thus possessing the ability to achieve very special effects. "An important part of design," he says, "is taking your materials and somehow abstracting them so they bcome stonger and more exciting, even when a realistic interior is required."
