Biography
Oliver Messel was best known for his designs for the ballet. There, his use of color and conservative, but naturalistic, scenery was celebrated as a welcome change following World War II.

In addition to his many ballet projects, Messel designed for the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, and several Shakespearean productions at both the Old Vic and the Globe theatre, in London. Messel was the author, in 1933, of a textbook on design and presentation techniques called Stage Design and Costumes.
