Biography
Mary Bonner was born in Louisiana, but came to San Antonio at an early age for her education. She attended the University of Texas from 1904 to 1906, but became frustrated with the limited opportunities for artists in Texas at the time. Like Mary Cassatt before her, Bonner traveled to Paris in the early 1920s to learn the printmaker's art, in large part because Paris was the center of the art world, but also because it was easier for a woman to study art in Europe than in the United States. Her prints of cowboys and ranch life caused a sensation when exhibited in Paris, and are still her most beloved images.
