In addition to Pueblo and Navajo weavings, Rio Grande textiles comprise a rich traditiion in New Mexico. Spanish settlers along the Rio Grande used a horziontal treadle loom, instead of the vertical loom of the Pueblo and Navajo, to produce these textiles. The horizontal look allowed for a nearly endless length of yardage, which resulted in a textiles with fringes originating from the ends of the warp. Developed in the village of El Valle, north of Santa Fe, the Vallero-style blanket is brilliantly colored and characterized by the eight-pointed star motif.
