Further information
Pierre-Jean David d'Angers revived portrait sculpture during the Romantic period by drawing on the classical tradition of busts and medallions. The small portrait of Fresnel recalls the busts of republican Rome in its simplicity and sense of individuality. By tilting the head forward, David d'Angers suggested deep thought and the life of the mind.
