Larry Poons' paintings from the 1960s consist of optical arrangements of dots and ellipses that float against monochromatic backgrounds. Here, the formal elements were determined by plotting points on a gridded matrix according to predetermined mathematical principles. By establishing rules that generated each painting, Poons marked a development in the history of painting shared by his longtime friend and close collaborator Frank Stella.
