One of a small group of French artists who brought a sense of movement and spontaneity to sculpture in the late 1800s, Dalou often did portraits of friends from the world of the arts, individuals notable for their lively personalities. Paul Avenel (1823-1902) was a novelist, poet, critic, and songwriter who wrote several popular musicals. Dalou modeled Avenel’s face with verve, giving the impression that he is about to speak.
Along with the sculpture of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) and Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887), Dalou’s work prefigured the work of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917).
