In the sculpture Summer, a youth shades his eyes from the bright sun, observing the rays of light caught by his hand and reflected in the subtle half-tones of his face. In similar small sculptures of the human form, Rousseau posed several solitary figures observing the wonders of nature.
Plasters were a popular medium at this time, with the mold lines left visible after Rodin had introduced the look. We know that Roussseau gave this work to a fellow artist, who would have valued its appearance of being fresh from the studio.
