Further information
Pierre-Jean David d'Angers revived portrait sculpture during the Romantic period by drawing on the classical tradition of busts and medallions. In his medallions, the artist emphasized the brainpower of his subjects by their high foreheads and dramatically tousled "genius" hair. He created a pantheon of more than 500 portraits of leaders of the Romantic era in France in the medallion format.
