Further information
The found-object sculptor Richard Stankiewicz took a very different approach to printmaking than most. Rather than use finely polished copper plates and precision tools for his intaglio prints, he used bits of discarded steel that he worked with blowtorches and sprayed with acid (spit bite). In this example, he actually cut a hole through the steel plate, leaving a flap of steel hanging like the lid of a tin can. This raw and rather brutal approach to printmaking was difficult to control, and therefore, Stankiewicz's editions were small.
