Further information
Named for the shells in the foreground, Shells shows the expanse of the Embrey family homestead in Hamilton, Texas, where Carl Rice Embrey spends much of his time drawing, photographing, and carefully observing the surroundings. In his San Antonio studio, Embrey paints compositions that evoke memories of the land where he grew up and his personal feelings about family and friends who once occupied the structures there. No longer filled with the warmth and life he knew as a child, the buildings in the distance have also become empty shells to the artist.
