Jane Avril (1868-1943), nicknamed "La Mélinite" (an explosive), danced at the Moulin Rouge in 1891. She usually danced alone, but sometimes she danced in a group of four. She performed in London, New York, and the provinces of France, and was known for the high-kicking dance called the can-can.
