Further information
The Minotaur became one of Picasso's favorite symbols in the 1930s. He saw the mythical being as embodying the duality of man's true nature, capable of both great violence and loving tenderness. This dichotomy is represented in his Minotaur Caressing a Woman. Here, the presence of music and flowers suggests a romantic scene, but the Minotaur is forcefully grabbing the woman from behind, suggesting a more aggressive, even primal encounter.
