Popol Vuh, or Book of the People, is the creation story of the K'iche' (sometimes spelled Quiché) people, a Maya culture existing since Pre-Columbian times in what is now Guatemala. Mérida traced his roots to these people so the Popol Vuh had particular resonance for him. He decided not to illustrate the book in a literal fashion. Rather, he wanted to give a sense of the wonder of the creation story presented.
Thus the creation and formation of man took place. And his flesh was made of earth and clay.
