After years of studying academic painting in the Midwest and Europe, Victor Higgins traveled to Taos, New Mexico in 1914, looking to develop his authentic style. Fascinated with the colorful life of the Pueblo people and the natural beauty of northern New Mexico, Higgins became a permanent resident within a year of his arrival and a member of the Taos Society of Artists. He is recognized for his sensitivity to brilliant colors and for his ability to capture the transitory effects of nature.
Through socialite and Taos resident Mabel Dodge Luhan, Higgins met Marion Koogler McNay in the early 1930s. They married in 1937 and moved to San Antonio to live at Sunset Hills, now the McNay Art Museum. Despite Marion McNay's effort to help Higgins financially, and therefore allow him to concentrate on his artistic work, he grew discontented with living away from New Mexico. Higgins and McNay divorced in 1940.
