Further information
Lured to New Mexico by the stuning landscape, Joseph H. Sharp and other artists founded the Taos Society of Artists. Using an academic style of painting, these artists not only depicted the Taos environs, but also recorded customs of local indigeneous groups. Also Sharp studied Native American culture, he - like many Taos artists - tended to romanticize his subjects, emphasizing exotic aspects of their culture.
