Further information
Inspired by Claude Monet's paintings of Rouen Cathedral, Lichtenstein's suite of six lithographs, Cathedral #1-6, was an exploration of how people see. Like Monet, Lichtenstein depicts the Gothic cathedral at Rouen in different times of day. The subject of the prints, as in Monet's paintings, only becomes clear from a distance. Lichtenstein's prints are also a comment on the commercialization of high culture by the technology of mass culture. The dots that form the images resemble the halftone dots of reproductions in newspapers and magazines. This suite, then, represents Monet for the masses.
