Further information
The niche framing the figure attests to Ortega's use of modern methods. After the introduction of sawmills in New Mexico in 1847, a few santeros like Ortega incorporated scraps of lumber from the new mills. The figure of the Virgin Mary is carved from native cottonwood, while the niche is made from milled lumber.
