American Impressionist Frederick Frieseke uses cool purples, blues, and greens to give this rural landscape the feeling of a cool, crisp day in early winter. A village is depicted behind a pasture and shelter for livestock. Three figures, painted with few brushstrokes, tend to the grazing animals in the dappled light.
Born in Michigan, Frieseke spent most of his life in France after studying there in his 20s. In the village of Giverny, the artist and his wife befriended artist Claude Monet.
