"I keep taking photographic self-portraits because of my fascination with being seen."
—Yasumasa Morimura

Japanese artist Yasumasa Morimura recreates famous European and American paintings using makeup and costume to disguise himself. Morimura’s photograph is based on a painting by Spanish artist Francisco de Goya (1746–1828) of Spanish aristocrat María Cayetana de Silva, the 13th Duchess of Alba, which is reproduced below. Following the death of her husband, Goya depicted the Duchess wearing a black mourning dress. Morimura’s reinterpretation of art historical masterpieces comments on Japan’s complex absorption of European and American culture.
