Further information
“She brought to my studio sweet cakes from her house, boiled milk, all sorts of decorative materials, even some boards which I used for an easel. I had only to open my bedroom window, and blue air, love, and flowers entered with her,” is how Marc Chagall describes his beloved wife, Bella Rosenfeld, who grew up, like the artist, in the small village of Vitebsk, Belarus.

The couple left Russia in 1922, but both their cherished village and blossoming courtship echo throughout the composition. Notice the uneven rooftops outside the window and the lovers embracing in the lower left corner. The title Dream Village and open window suggest a dreamy nostalgia of the past comingled with the present.
