Further information
By the 1930s, Stuart Davis had returned from Paris with a deeper understanding of Cubism and was able to use some of its more challenging concepts in his work. Sixth Avenue El, the artist's lithographic masterpiece and one of the most important American prints of the twentieth century, combines the fractured perspective of Cubism with an incredible sense of movement. Diagonal lines and even an arrow make our eyes dart around the image, giving a real sense of looking out the window of an elevated train as it speeds through Manhattan.
