Further information
In 1930, Raoul Dufy made ten watercolors of female nudes with drapery, including this one. As an art student in the early 1900s, Dufy portrayed the backs of female nudes in studio and intimate settings, similar to nudes at "toilette" by Edgar Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Later, Dufy experimented with Cézanne-inspired and Fauvist oil and watercolor paintings of nude females during the 1910s and mid-1920s. In the late 1920s, he painted nudes in his Montmartre studio, which he continued to do until the late 1930s. These later nudes exemplify Dufy's mature style in their use of limited perspective and bold color.
Nude in Drapery depicts a studio model lying face down in drapery, her body outlined with thin, brown marks. Lines indicating her stomach, back, and thighs form arabesques, complemented by the drapery's blue brushstrokes, which also form gentle curves. Dufy often contrasted skin color with blue. Inclusions of blue combined with the figure's pose create a sense of melancholy.
