Further information
Flying American unites two of Larry Rivers' artistic interests: representing the human figure -- a career-long concern -- and use of painterly brushwork. Beginning in the red block with a curving black line for the left side of the face, a series of other black lines and white streaks demarcates a figure. Moving down into the blue and purple upper torso area, the contours of shoulders and arms appear, with a whitened triangle suggesting a collar or neckline. In the lower green section, two parallel vertical patches imply trousers. Expressive application of the paint connects Flying American to Abstract Expressionism, while the overlapping color forms recall the influence of Hans Hofmann, with whom Rivers had studied.
