Further information
Christian Bérard exemplified the tradition of the artist-decorator. Bérard’s designs exemplify the neo-romantic sensibility he brought to theatre as well as to painting. The moral transgressions of L’Occasion, the outsider existence of actors in Les Forains, and the exotic enchantments of Renaud et Armide -- all appealed to Bérard. He approached these themes with a painterly ease belying the seriousness of his collaborations with leading playwrights, directors, and choreographers.
