Further information
Born to Eastern European immigrant parents in Chicago, Reuben Kadish was raised in Los Angeles and studied painting with the young Philip Guston and Jackson Pollock, all of whom would later be associated with the New York School of Abstract Expressionist artists. Kadish apprenticed with famed Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros, and later made his way to New York to teach sculpture at the Cooper Union. Iris reflects Kadish's expressionist roots, as the artist's hand is clearly indicated on the pinched and rough surface of the figure.
