Picasso’s Góngora was created during one of the happiest times in the artist’s life. He was well established as one of the most famous and successful artists of his day, living with Françoise Gilot and their two young children in the South of France. Picasso had always been hailed as the spiritual heir of the great Spanish painting tradition, but it was at this time of burgeoning international fame that he was thinking of his origins and heritage. So, when approached to create a livre d’artiste, the poems of Luis de Góngora (1561-1627), the great Spanish Baroque poet and a favorite of Picasso’s, seemed the perfect inspiration. Eight of the twenty sonnets in the suite are love poems, so Picasso produced portraits of beautiful women to introduce each, a nod to his love, Françoise Gilot. He also reproduced his own handwritten transcriptions of each poem to which he added related marginalia.
