Further information
Hand-carved dowels penetrate the four sides of a roughhewn pyramid in this early work by Texas-native James Surls. Made from a solid piece of cottonwood, the pyramid rises from four inverted feet. Viewed straight on, a single dowel with its burnt circle and pierced center resembles the outline of an eye’s iris and pupil. Ringed Eye showcases many hallmarks of Surls’ assemblage work: forms with organic and ancient origins; unfinished natural wood; and tool marks.
