Further information
In 1918, after B. J. O. Nordfeldt visited his friend and fellow artist William Penhallow Henderson in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Nordfeldt decided to move to the Southwest, where he eventually settled. In 1921, Nordfeldt and his wife observed the reenactment of the Passion of Christ during Holy Week. The dramatic ceremony left a strong impression on Nordfeldt, inspiring a series of etchings and paintings including Crucfixion with Birds. Here, Nordfeldt emphasizes the monumentality of the crucifixion by depicting an oversized cross and reducing the size of the moradas, or worship buildings.
