In April, when the weather warms, Katsina dances are held in the villages’ open plazas. These dances may be either Soyohim (Mixed Katsina Dances), in which all the dancers are different types of Katsinam, or Line Dances, in which all of the Katsinam are the same. The Wakas Katsina, its name deriving from the Spanish vaca (cow), appears in the Mixed Dance ceremonies to represent cattle, and its presence is a prayer for their increase.
