Further information
Divan Japonais was a Montmartre cabaret that was open for short stints in 1893 and 1894. In this poster, Toulouse-Lautrec focused on two members of the audience: the celebrated dancer Jane Avril and the music critic Édouard Dujardin. Appearing on stage, in the background, is Yvette Guilbert, wearing her trademark long black gloves. The image is Toulouse-Lautrec's first of Guilbert, whom he would celebrate the following year in an album of lithographs.
