The McNay's impression of this landmark German Expressionist portrait is particularly rich, with the burr of the drypoint printing beautifully, especially in the areas on top of the bowler hat and the cat's back. Beckmann cleverly uses the warm, fuzzy quality of a fresh drypoint line to describe these areas, since it is remarkably well-suited to depicting the textures of wool and fur. A notable feature, aside from the formal niceties of the print, is the way in which the sitter addresses his audience. Beckmann presents himself as a modern, jaded man whose large, round eyes have seen much of the horrors of his time.
