Created for the Theatre d'ombres (Shadow Theatre) at Le Chat Noir (The Black Cat) cabaret in Montmartre, where Henri Rivière and other artists projected the shadows of zinc cutouts on a backlit screen, accompanied by music, sound effects, and commentary.
Further information
This parody of a fin-de-siecle painter reveals the sophistication of shadow puppets. Mesh fabric (remnants of which are visible in the artist's clothing) created a variety of tones and not just black and white.
