Further information
In this stage scene, Hercules (identified by his lion skin) wields a club against Cerebrus, the three-headed dog guarding the entry to Hades.

In early Christian writing and medieval mystery plays, Jesus' descent into Hell before his resurrection was modelled on the underworld exploits of ancient Greek and Roman heroes.
