Prodded by his friends (and fueled by drink), Hoffmann's hero recounts the stories of his ill-fated love affairs. Franco Colavecchia appropriated staring eyes, flayed heads, and other scientific illustrations to suggest the horrifying world of the young man's memories or dreams.
