Further information
Antonio Basoli's scene designs, with their gestural drawing and fluid washes, are clearly working drafts. Sometimes, perspective guidelines for architectural elements or cast shadows are visible, drawn with a graphite pencil and a straight edge. Usually, the designs are divided into squares and scale is indicated in the margin. This grid and scale would facilitate the process of enlarging the designs and transferring them onto painted backdrops.
