Further information
Baroque theatre was about gods and heroes. Italian architect-designer Ludovico Burnacini perfected the "machines" -- suspended platforms disguised as clouds that flew gods across the stage, giving rise to the term "deus ex machina" for an improbable plot device.
At the Viennese imperial court, Burnacini created lavish entertainments, notably Il Pomo d'Oro (1668), an opera based on the myth of the judgement of Paris and the legend of the Trojan Wars.
