Further information
Koltai enlarged and fragmented body parts to convey wartime brutality against women, a theme central to Bernd Alois Zimmerman's opera. Although based on an 18th-century play, Koltai updated the context. The area above the breasts functioned as a screen for projections. These included Whaam!, Roy Lichtenstein's comic-book inspired painting of fighter planes made in 1963 as the Vietnam War escalated.
