Once Eastman begins the march to San Antonio, we get the first glimpse of his army compatriots. Tents are pitched with military precision in the shadow of massive live oak trees. Eastman must have been struck by the sturdy evergreens that kept their leaves despite the fall season, drawing them repeatedly on his overland journey.
