Amorous adventures take Alban Berg’s red-headed heroine, Lulu, from the gutter to the stage, a mansion, a prison, and back to the street again. In the process, Lulu is responsible for the deaths of five admirers, including the wealthy Dr. Schön. Learning that his son, Alwa, is one of Lulu’s admirers, Dr. Schön hands her a pistol, but instead of shooting herself, she shoots Dr. Schön five times. Sentenced to prison, Lulu is rescued by the Countess Geschwitz.
