Further information
100 miles downriver of New Orleans, Eastman's steamboat entered the Gulf of Mexico at the Southwest Pass, one of the channels at the most southwestern tip of the Mississippi River Delta.
The pilots were critical to navigating ships to and from the port of New Orleans through the constantly shifting passages, currents, and sandbars of the river delta. Still today, all oceangoing ships must take a pilot on board when entering the Mississippi River system.
