Further information
Eastman stopped briefly at the U.S. Barracks located on the banks of the Mississippi, outside of New Orleans. Later known as the Jackson Barracks, this military garrison housed four companies of infantry, a hospital, and support facilities. The Barracks' towers situated on the corners of the garrison provided Eastman with a bird's eye view of the rapidly expanding city of New Orleans, and the levee and river to the left.
