From the Barracks' tower, Eastman looked across the river to the city of Algiers, now part of New Orleans. Algiers comprises the point in the bend of the Mississippi as it flows out of New Orleans to the gulf. Known for shipbuilding, the masts of tall ships are visible on the right.
