Musical by Oscar Asche with music by Frederic Norton. Produced at His Majesty's Theatre, London, 1916. "Re-dressed" by Percy Anderson, 1918.
Puccini began work on Turandot in 1920 when Chu Chin Chow was breaking records for the longest running musical. Like Puccini's opera, Chu Chin Chow was inspired by a story from the so-called Arabian Nights, Ali-Baba and the Forty Thieves. The musical also brought together characters and costumes from the Silk Road, linking the Arabian Peninsula and China.
