Located between Memphis and Vicksburg, Helena was a frequent stopover for steamboats to take on supplies and restock wood harvested by local wood cutters. Timber and cotton were the area's principal industries with plantation agriculture dominating the economy. By 1860, nearly 9,000 of the population of 15,000 were slaves.
