Further information
The sensation of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes 1910 season, Schéhérazade brought Orientalism into the 20th century. Presenting an orgy of color, Léon Bakst's scenery and costumes inspired artists, including the German Expressionist painter Max Pechstein.
Pechstein depicted the moment when the Shah returns and discovers his wives engaged in an orgy with the male slaves. He orders his guards to kill them all.
