Further information
With the great composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on his mind, Eugene Berman created this portrait. It represents Berman’s melancholy style—a mix of traditional and dreamlike elements. Mozart’s profile is offset by a dark aura and background. The portrait’s muddy tones highlighted in white reference Baroque drawings from the 1700s. Berman created this artwork between designing sets and costumes for two of Mozart’s most enduring operas—Cosi fan Tutte in 1955 for La Piccolo Scala, Italy, and Don Giovanni for the Metropolitan Opera’s 1957 season.
